How the range is worked out

  1. Each question has a difficulty level from our Tiffin question bank. Difficulty levels are set by our question writers.
  2. In each paper we find the ability that best explains how many your son got right, allowing for how hard those questions were.
  3. Tiffin's Stage One scores are standardised. We use the usual 11+ scale, where the boys who sit it average 100 in each paper with most between 85 and 115, and place your son's ability on it. The result is our estimate on that scale, not a Tiffin score.
  4. Tiffin invites the boys with the highest average of English and maths to Stage Two, so we show that average too. With six or seven questions a paper the range is wide; a full timed mock narrows it.

Questions

Is this an official Tiffin paper?

No. The questions are our own, written for Tiffin's Stage One English and maths, and each one was solved independently by two solvers. Tiffin publishes illustrative questions on its website.

How accurate is the score?

It is a range, because 13 questions cannot pin down one score. A full timed Stage One mock covers far more of the test.

How long does it take?

15 minutes: English 8 and maths 7. Tiffin's 2027 FAQ says its Stage One English and maths tests typically take 40 to 60 minutes each. This sample uses its own timings.

Do we need an account?

No. A parent report shows straight away: answers by paper, where to start and three sessions for this week, to print or save as a PDF. A free account is optional; it keeps the report and works through every answer.

How does Tiffin choose boys for Stage Two?

By the average of the standardised Stage One English and maths scores. At Stage Two, the final ranking weights Stage Two English 50%, Stage Two maths 30% and Stage One maths 20%.
