How the range is worked out
- Each question has a difficulty level from our Tiffin question bank. A middle-level question is one an average boy sitting Stage One gets right about two times in three.
- In each paper we find the ability that best explains how many your son got right, allowing for how hard those questions were.
- Tiffin's Stage One scores are standardised: the boys who sit it average 100 in each paper, with most between 85 and 115. We place your son's ability on that scale.
- Tiffin invites the boys with the highest average of English and maths to Stage Two, so we show that average too. With six or seven questions a paper the range is wide; a full timed mock narrows it.
Questions
Is this an official Tiffin paper?
No. The questions are our own, written for Tiffin's Stage One English and maths, and each one was solved independently by two solvers. Tiffin publishes illustrative questions on its website.
How accurate is the score?
It is a range, because 13 questions cannot pin down one score. About two times in three your son's level sits inside it. A full timed Stage One mock narrows it a lot.
How long does it take?
15 minutes: English 8 and maths 7. Tiffin does not publish Stage One question counts or timings, so we use a steady pace of about a minute a question.
Do we need an account?
No. The marks and the likely scores show straight away. A free account adds the topics to fix first, a two-week plan and every answer explained, and keeps them.
How does Tiffin choose boys for Stage Two?
By the average of the standardised Stage One English and maths scores. At Stage Two, the final ranking weights Stage Two English 50%, Stage Two maths 30% and Stage One maths 20%.
